DOCUMENTS FOR CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT

A general overview of the documents you may be asked for.

The exact list and required format can vary by Consulate, Comune and individual case. Always follow the current written instructions of the authority handling your application.

This is only an orientation. It is not a universal checklist and does not replace the instructions of your Consulate or other competent authority.

Documents commonly seen in applications

Depending on the case, applicants may be asked for the Italian ancestor’s birth record, birth and marriage records needed to document the direct family line, and evidence concerning naturalization or non-naturalization in the country of emigration.

Requirements can differ

Consulates may differ on the exact documents, formats, ages of certificates and additional evidence they require. Before ordering a record, check the current checklist for the authority handling your application.

What I can obtain in Italy

My service focuses on identified Italian records, especially birth, marriage and church records. If your Consulate or adviser has given you an exact document description, send it to me and I can assess whether I can obtain it. Foreign documents, translations and legal advice are outside my service.

General information based on official MAECI and Italian consular guidance. Requirements may vary by Consulate and case and should always be checked directly with the competent authority.
